Paphos Souls
Paphos Souls
The minute I stepped into the basement, where the Paphos photographic archive from the early 20th century had been abandoned for over forty years, this was the first image I saw. Rather than just boxes, these containers hold memories and archival evidence of the city's history during the early part of the 20th century.
As the story unfolds, Spyros Haritou's glass negative plates have been in his basement for decades, untouched. As the first photographer in Paphos, Haritou opened his studio in 1925, and his collection includes a significant body of his work. Haritou was the first photographer in Paphos.
In addition to photographing high-profile citizens, Haritou became fascinated with aspects of daily life in the town, such as national celebrations, religious festivals, and local fairs.
