3. The Greasy Pole - Paphos 2020
3. The Greasy Pole - Paphos 2020
The Greasy Pole or Slippery Pole highlights all traditional games played during the Kataklysmos Festival in the Paphos harbor every year. A wooden electricity pole is placed above sea level. Then a flag is positioned at the ending point of the pole. Then grease is added to the pole throughout its length. To win the game, contestants have to grab the flag positioned at the end of the pole. Not any easy mission.
"Kataklysmos," meaning deluge or cataclysm in Greek, is a religious festival held 50 days after the Greek Orthodox Easter. Traditionally a celebration of Noah and the flood, the festival has roots in both the Bible and Greek mythology.
