The Greasy Pole or Slippery Pole is the highlight of all traditional games played during the Kataklysmos Festival in the Paphos harbor every year. A wooden electricity pole is placed parallel, a few meters above sea level, a flag is positioned at the end of the pole, which has to be grabbed to claim victory, and large quantities of grease are added all over the length of the pole to make the mission impossible for the contestant to achieve.
"Kataklysmos", meaning deluge or cataclysm in Greek, is a religious festival held 50 days after the Greek Orthodox Easter. Traditionally a celebration of Noah and the flood, the festival has its roots in both the Bible and Greek mythology.
